Ingredients

1 1/2 cup Masoor dal, rinsed over three times
6 cups Water
2 Tomatoes, roughly chopped
1 tsp Salt
1/2 tsp Turmeric
1 Thai chili
1 tbsp Ghee
1 tsp Mustard seeds
1 tsp Cumin seeds
1-2 Green chilies (omit if using thai chili)
1 tsp Chopped fresh ginger
1/2 Yellow onion, finely chopped
Pinch of asaefoetida (hing)
1 Clove
Juice of one or two limes
Handful of fresh chopped cilantro
Salt as needed

Preparation

put first six ingredients in pressure cooker and cook for 15-20 minutes or in slow cooker overnight.

make the chouk by toasting the spices in the ghee , and then saute the onion until translucent.

Add to the dal once it is cooked, and adjust for salt. Remove thai chili.

Add lime juice and cilantro just before serving.
