Italian Pasta Bake

Family-favorite casserole

Ingredients

12 oz. Packaged dried penne pasta

8 oz. Bulk turkey Italian sausage

1/3 cup Chopped onion

1/4 cup All purpose flour

2 tsp Dried basil, crushed

1/8 tsp Salt

1/8 tsp Pepper

2 cups Lowfat milk

1 14-1/2 oz Can diced tomatoes

1 cup Shredded mozzarella or provolone cheese (about 4 oz)

1/2 cup Finely shredded Romano or Parmesean cheese (about 2 oz)

Preparation

1. In a large saucepan or pot, cook pasta according to package directions. Drain and return to saucepan. Set aside.

2. Meanwhile, in large skillet, cook sausage and onion until sausage is no longer pink. Drain. Stir flour, dried basil, salt, and pepper into sausage mix. Add milk all at once. Cook and stir until thickened and bubbly. Cook and stir 1 minute more. Stir in undrained tomatoes and cheeses. Pour over pasta. Toss to mix.

3. Spread mixture in a 3-quart rectangular baking dish. Cover with foil. Bake at 350 for 25-30 minutes or until hot. If desired, garnish with fresh basil and additional Romano cheese. Makes 6-8 servings.

Cook's Notes

You can use different pasta shapes - penne, shells, bow ties, or rotini. Let the kids choose!
