1 tablespoon Butter
1 cup Chopped onion
1 Egg
Salt and ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon Dried thyme
1 pound Ground beef
1/2 cup Rolled oats
2 ounces Cheddar cheese cut into small cubes
1 1/2 cup Tomato sauce
1 Bay leaf
Preparation
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the onion and simmer until soft.
In a large bowl, mix the egg with the onion, salt, pepper, and thyme. Add the ground meat and stir well. Fold in the bread crumbs, cheese, and 1/2 of the tomato sauce. Form the mixture into a loaf and place it in a roasting pan Cover with the rest of the tomato sauce and the bay leaf. Bake for one hour.
Cook's Notes
My aunt always used one pound of ground beef for this recipe, but I've found that you can use half ground turkey and half ground beef and it's just as good.
