Grandma's Great Desserts Cookbook

This simple-to-fix recipe came out of an old Swedish cookbook that my mom always held together with a large rubber band. The recipe is my favorite!

Ingredients

* 6 large baking apples, pared and sliced

* 2 teaspoons Ground cinnamon

* 1 cup Sugar, divided

* 1 tablespoon Butter

* 1/2 cup Milk

* 1 cup All-purpose flour

* 1 teaspoon Baking powder

* VANILLA SAUCE:

* 1 cup Sugar

* 2 tablespoons Cornstarch

* 1/2 teaspoon Salt

* 2 cups Cold water

* 2 tablespoons Butter

* 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract

Preparation

Directions:

Arrange apples in a 13-in. x 9-in. x 2-in. baking pan. Combine cinnamon and 1/2 cup sugar. Reserve 1 tablespoon; sprinkle remaining mixture over apples.

In a mixing bowl, combine butter, milk, remaining sugar, flour and baking powder. Drop by tablespoonfuls over apples; sprinkle reserved cinnamon/sugar on top. Bake at 350° for 35-40 minute or until golden brown.

Meanwhile, for sauce, combine sugar, cornstarch, salt and water in a saucepan. Cook, stirring constantly, over medium heat until thick. Remove from heat; add butter and vanilla. Serve sauce and kuchen warm. Yield: 10-12 servings.
