Eat Better, Eat Together is a blog series by registered dietitians, educators and parents whose stories and advice help families start or strengthen a commitment to balanced family meals. Take the Eat Better, Eat Together Family Meal Pledge at Facebook.com/MealsMatter.org.
Eating together helps families connect with each other, strengthen family ties and pass on family cultural traditions. To set the tone for your family meals, be sure to tune out distractions like phones, computers and the television and tune in to the conversation.
Parents can get the conversation started by sharing a story about their day, and then ask children to share something they learned in school. Another way to get the conversation going is to ask family members to guess what ingredients are in the meal, which of the five food groups they represent or name the foods they like best.
To remind families to tune in during family meals, this week’s menu starts with Skillet Tuna Noodle Casserole, Oh Boy, Squash! and Watermelon Smoothies. Remember to tune into mealtime conversation all week long with recipes like Cheer ‘Em On Mochaccinos, Pepperoni Poppin’ Veggie Calzones, Orange Scream and Crunchy Mandarin Chicken Salad with Spinach.
Register at MealsMatter.org to add these and other recipes to a personalized family meal plan and shopping list. Visit Facebook to take the Eat Better, Eat Together family meal pledge and follow the hashtag #EatBetter2Gether for family meal updates on Twitter.
