During long holiday weekends, it can be easy to over-indulge with party foods and beverages. While splurging on food once in awhile is fine and can be balanced out with physical activity, another strategy is to plan healthy party menus ahead of time. This week’s recipes help your family celebrate Independence Day with red, white and blue recipes that are good for you too.

Start with a featured family meal of Blue Ribbon Meatloaf, Caprese Salad and Blueberry Pomegranate Smoothies. Other healthy recipes to enjoy all week long include, Blue Cheese Pepper Steak Wraps, Jalapeno Red Bean BBQ Burgers, Watermelon Arugula, Feta Salad with Humus and Whole Grain Pita, and Strawberries and Cream Parfaits. Be sure to follow @MealsMatter on Twitter and register at MealsMatter.org to add these and other recipes to a personalized family meal plan and shopping list.

“Family Meals Matter” features recipes selected by registered dietitians from the thousands of user-contributed recipes available at the free family nutrition and meal-planning website, Meals Matter, operated by registered dietitians and moms with Dairy Council of California.
