Biographer Parson Weems first published the account of a young George Washington chopping down a cherry tree and admitting when questioned, "I can't tell a lie, Pa" in The Life of Washington (1800.) While this story was never confirmed as fact, it does make a fruitful way to honor Washington on Presidents’ Day. It is a healthy way to celebrate, too, because cherries are loaded with antioxidants, beta-carotene, vitamin C, potassium, magnesium, iron, fiber and folate.
This week, celebrate our nation’s first president and his truth-telling ways with a family meal of Cranberry Cherry Relish with Sage Roasted Turkey Breast, Green Bean Casserole and Cherry Yogurt Parfaits. Other cherry-infused dishes to enjoy throughout the week include Cherry Vanilla Oatmeal, Cherry Chicken, Cold Cherry Soup or Cod with Spicy Orange and Black Cherry Sauce, with Couscous.
