For centuries, we have used salt as a seasoning, a preservative and even as currency. Today, salt is present in many prepared or processed foods and often in quantities far higher than we think.
While we need some dietary sodium to maintain healthy body functions, a federal advisory committee for the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for American recommends reducing overall sodium intake to less than half of what most of American’s currently consume. Cutting down on the sodium in your diet can lower blood pressure, a major risk factor for the leading cause of death in the U.S., cardiovascular disease.
This week, we are passing up the salt with low-sodium, full flavor recipes your whole family will enjoy. For about the same amount of sodium as two slices of bacon (320 milligrams) or toasted-oat breakfast cereal with skim milk and orange juice (300 milligrams), enjoy an entire family meal of Grilled Honey Mustard Chicken with Toasted Almonds, Green Beans and Pan-Roasted Red Onions, Scalloped Parmesan Potatoes and Honey Poached Pears.
Then try other tasty, low-sodium recipes like Sunny Chicken Salad, Sweet Apricot and Roasted Chicken in Pasta, Gingery Salmon with Cucumber and Radish Salad and Cranberry Apple Dessert Risotto. With so much flavor, your family won’t miss the salt.
