My cardiologist told me to eat albacore tuna for the healthy, omega-3 fats they contain. Even at two servings a week, could I have toxic levels of mercury? Should I be eating salmon or taking a supplement instead?
Answer
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines suggest that canned tuna consumption should be limited to one can of tuna per week. You may want to consider getting these healthy fats from a variety of sources. Omega-3 fatty acids are also found in cold-water fish, such as salmon, as well as in plant foods including walnuts, flaxseeds and canola oil. Whole foods are a better option than supplements because other compounds in foods are necessary for good health.
