Do you have a suggestion for an eating plan plus an exercise program for my 10 year old daughter? She weighs 105 - 107 lbs., and is 4'10" tall. I am concerned about her weight but do not want to force her to be on a diet. I would like her to grow into her weight, but do not know how to go about this.
Answer
It is important to realize that restrictive diets rarely work and are not appropriate for children, even for those children that may be considered "overweight". Using the food guide pyramid as a tool, offer your daughter foods from the main food groups to make sure she gets the nutrients she needs to grow while limiting foods from the "extras" group (fats & sweets).
The best approach is to increase physical activity, which burns calories. Limit the amount of time your child spends in front of the television, playing video games or at the computer to 2 hours a day. Instead, encourage your daughter to increase her physical activity by joining her for a game of soccer, dancing or going for a walk. Not only will you both have fun, but your daughter will also learn about good health and fitness from the good example you are setting.
