My 3 year-old seems to be getting a rash every time I feed her eggs. She has been eating eggs with no problem up until now. Is it possible for her to develop food allergies over time?
Answer
It is important to remember that although your child may have eaten a certain food several times, it often takes quite a bit of time for the body’s immune system to produce a symptomatic response to foods she may either be allergic or intolerant to. The most common food allergens for young children are eggs, soybeans, wheat, fish, shellfish, milk, peanuts and tree nuts. Most children outgrow their allergies to eggs, wheat, milk and soy; children can be reintroduced to those foods at a later age. Be sure to include your pediatrician in your decision to try foods that have previously caused reactions in your child.

If food allergies are a problem, familiarize yourself with food labels, including determining whether some foods may have come into contact with equipment used to process foods your child may be allergic to. Your pediatrician can assist you in obtaining resources for what to do in the event of an allergic reaction, including medications to keep on hand.
