My 3 year-old has not been eating well lately. She normally eats just about anything I put in front of her, but now prefers to play with her food instead of eating it. Should I be worried?
Answer
Fluctuations in eating patterns are normal for toddlers, and ensuring that your child is getting adequate nutrition can be challenging. In these cases, it is important to realize that feeding your child may not always follow a set schedule. One common culprit is too many beverages offered throughout the day, as calories from these may curb hunger during mealtimes. Smaller, more frequent nutrient-rich meals and snacks can provide the nutrients and energy your child needs without overwhelming her with larger portions.
Young children may not be able to tell you when they are not feeling well. A poor appetite can be an indicator of a fever from a cold or flu, or even a headache. Monitor your child's intake to determine whether she simply does not like the foods being offered, or if she might be behaving abnormally. Call your pediatrician if the problem persists.
